THE MYTH

Raphael's Triumph of Galatea (c. 1512), seen in the Loggia di Galatea of Villa Farnesina in Rome, Italy, is beautifully triumphant in her shell chariot, her dynamic contrapposto pose exuding ideal elegance and beauty.

As narrated in Ovid's Metamorphoses, Galatea is known as the beloved of Acis, who was murdered out of jealousy by a massive boulder at the hands of the Cyclops Polyphemus. Utterly heartbroken by the loss of her lover, she transforms Acis into a river god, his blood turning into a clear river stream merging into the sea.

THE DESIGN STORY

Inspired by the Greek mythological figure Galatea's transformation from nymph to goddess, this heirloom is a creative study of myth giving way to movement. Sensual lines arc with intention, echoing the contours of her seashell chariot, before converging on a white gold bezel-set detachable diamond, suspended like a droplet of light.

THE ARTWORK

Illustrated by Cornwall-based illustrator Caitlin Turner, known for her whimsical and macabre creations that produce an old storybook feel. This rich graphite artwork print reflects the original dignity and grace of Raphael's Galatea, while interweaving her heartbreak over the death of her lover Acis with a more vulnerable, almost sepulchral intensity.

Here, Galatea has been re-interpreted in the romantic style of a divine sea creature, inspired by Romantic Nationalist illustrators such as the late John Bauer. Signed by the artist, printed on acid-free paper and glassine-wrapped.
