THE MYTH

As narrated by the fourth-century rhetorician Themistius, Anteros was given to Eros as a brother and playmate when he was unable to "grow to a size appropriate to his beauty". The two brothers represent the two counterparts of love, with Eros representing erotic desire, and Anteros love returned.

In Annibale Carracci's representation (1597-1602) in the Farnese Gallery in Rome, they are depicted as sparring with each other, symbolizing the wrestle between erotic and reciprocal (true) love.

THE DESIGN STORY

Rival brothers spar with each other to claim the victor's prize. Anteros, symbol of love reciprocated, claims victory in a pear-shaped sapphire, while Eros, patron of unrequited longing, takes softer form in a classic round shape. Slip this on to straddle the half-world between longing and fulfilment.

THE ARTWORK

Illustrated by Cornwall-based illustrator Caitlin Turner, known for her surreal and macabre creations that produce an old storybook feel. This rich graphite artwork print depicts Anteros punishing Eros by reaching out for the wreath, symbol of victory; a moral suggestion that love, if it is to develop, requires reciprocal feeling.

Here, Eros and Anteros have been re-interpreted in the romantic style of mischievous wood sprites, inspired by Romantic Nationalist illustrators such as the late John Bauer. Signed by the artist, printed on acid-free paper and glassine-wrapped.
