THE MYTH

The only extended story from antiquity about Cupid & Psyche traces back to the 2nd century AD prose writer Apuleius. Cupid, sent on a mission by his mother Aphrodite to punish Psyche for her extraordinary beauty, ends up falling for her instead. Enraged, Aphrodite forces Psyche to undergo a series of trials to prove the depth of her true love for Cupid, which she passes. Zeus finally steps in and offers her the drink of immortality so that the couple can marry as divine equals.

Giulio Romano's Chamber of Cupid and Psyche (1526-28) is a rich and detailed study of their love story, culminating in the centre ceiling fresco where both lovers reach out for each other's hands in marriage, amidst the splendor of a public wedding feast.

THE DESIGN STORY

Oval-cut diamonds, articulated in a white gold bezel setting, entwine intimately with sensual gold swirls to symbolize a union tested and made eternal. Like true love, this design reveals itself in the tiny details.

THE ARTWORK

Illustrated by Cornwall-based illustrator Caitlin Turner, known for her whimsical and macabre creations that produce an old storybook feel. This rich graphite artwork print is a more tender and intimate interpretation of Cupid and Psyche as they finally reunite as divine equals and join each other in marriage.

Here, they are re-imagined as folk creatures in a more rustic woodland setting, inspired by Romantic Nationalist illustrators such as the late John Bauer. Signed by the artist, printed on acid-free paper and glassine-wrapped.
